Disturbing E-mail from My Son

December 4th, 2006 at 11:10 pm

I got an email from DS#1 shortly after I got to work today. I thought it was unusual to get one so soon after hearing from him yesterday. (He's not the chatty sort).

He says that 2 students tried to blow up the building that he works in at college! They are being charged with 250 counts of attempted murder. He didn't say if he was there at the time or not or when exactly this happened. He just said "just a bit ago", so I have no idea what that means as far as timeframe.

The really disturbing thing is that he works in the dorm for the handicapped students on campus. His college has one of the 3 highest enrollments of handicapped students. He helps them bathe, get in and out of wheelchairs, whatever they need.

What kind of demented people want to blow up a building full of handicapped kids???? That really disturbs me.

I am grateful that your email was that the bad boys didnt actually succeed. Thank God.

It is so insane that people would do such a horrific thing. I am glad your son and the 250 others are able to hug their loved ones tonight.

How awful. I remember well the day that a student shot and killed his counselor at a dorm, then turned the gun on himself -- at the college my son was attending. Thank goodness he was home at the time or I would have been frantic. But I was very sad for days, thinking of the families of both those young men.

I don't know what possess these kids to think and act out this way. It is truly beyond my comprehension. I'm am so very glad that everything turned out all right.

I am glad nobody was hurt. It is truly sad to think what could have driven those bad kids to try to pull off such a heinous act.

I have come to the conclusion that there are just some people in this world who are not right in the head. They are not sick, not insane or schizophrenic, not abused early in life, just wrong in the head. No conscience, no thoughts for what others feel, no impulse control, no judgement. They operate on a mindlessly selfish level and do things like this for "fun." Makes me sick to my stomach and heart when I read things like this.

I am glad your son is okay and that the attack was thwarted and that he will not have too hard a time dealing with this. I remember when a student was shot and killed by her ex-husband on my college campus. It was months before I felt safe at school again. I never could park in that parking lot again. Even now, 17 years later, when I take an adult enrichment class, I won't park in that parking lot.
