Paid Day Off Because of Flooding

March 15th, 2007 at 04:58 pm

I got a "free" vacation day today! With all of the snow melting and the steady downpour of rain all night long, roads all around us were shut down early this morning. Here is a picture of what I would have had to drive through to get to work:

Schools were cancelled and volunteer firemen were called home to help with evacuations and putting up signs along roadways.

DH was called home to help. My main problem with that is that his company will not pay him for being called out to volunteer for his community. They use his training that our community pays for when they need him to respond to a medical crisis or fire at work, but yet won't pay him when his community needs him. I don't think that's right. So we'll take a big hit in the paycheck for this week.

That is a bummer about your DH's job. As long as he's not being called out every other day, they should still pay him since they also benefit from his services.

I agree with daylili...it just doesnt make sense why he shouldnt get paid...With 'perks' like this, its a wonder more people dont volunteer, isnt it? geesh

I hope you didnt have damage from the flooding!

Glad you are on the home side of the water!

Nope, no damage for us. Others just 3 blocks from us are not so fortunate though. DH took me out in the truck when he got back from helping out all day. A few were evacuated and I fear that at least one family has lost their home- a beautiful log cabin.

Roads are still closed and it's doubtful if we will be able to get out for work or school tomorrow either. Guess it depends how high the river crests tonight and how much it recedes.

We had flooding here a few days ago. The force of the water totally rerouted the river by 30 feet! Fortunately it was in the existing river bed and it did take it far away from the road that it had been threatening to undercut for years. And it is two miles from our house. Some of last years corn fields still have ducks floating in them three days later, which always tickles me for some reason, ducks floating in corn fields. No loss of life this time and no homes destroyed, we were lucky. Last fall, it was bad out this way.
