Just wanted to warn everyone that if you buy a GE product be prepared to wait an eternity for service should something go wrong.
A few years ago we bought a Hotpoint (GE) refrigerator. We immediately had problems with the ice dispenser. We would wake up in the morning to find that there was water all over our kitchen floor. The water dispenser worked sporadically. The business that we bought it from came out and repaired it 3 times while it was under warranty. We still continued to have problems.
Finally, we got a notice in the mail that GE had a class action suit against them for the very same problems that we were experiencing. We filed our papers and eagerly awaited it to be made right. That was back in January of 2006. We are still waiting...
Originally we started trying to get it fixed with the original company from which we'd purchased it. 6 months went by and they were still waiting for the parts to arrive. So we contacted another repair shop that was listed in the paperwork we'd received from the class action settlement. 9 months later we're still waiting. The refrigerator doors that were shipped to us are still sitting on the porch, where they've been since November.
The repairman has contacted GE several times telling them that they sent the doors but did not send the ice/water dispenser (which is the problem part!). They have sent him 3 more doors instead!!! So now we have 5 doors and no icemaker unit.
Every time you call their 800 number to speak to them about it you are put on hold for at least 20 minutes and quite often over an hour before you finally get someone, if you don't get boiling mad and hang up first.
I have emailed them and complained about their service and have gotten an email back with the same 800 number to call!!!
I have told them that I am informing everyone I know not to buy their products because they do not back them up. Service is terrible and you might as well say, nonexistant.

I haven't owned a GE product in five years. 8 years ago we bought a service contract with them for the stove we got, we still get those begging letters saying please extend your service contract (the one that expired 7 years ago) on the item you bought. You know the one that caused an oven safe to 350 degrees dish full of grease to explode at 325 degrees that created a kitchen fire 2 days after the 3 year contract expired. Thank goodness for fire extinguishers. No, thanks on the service contract, GE can bite me.
